This bridge is a PC cable-stayed railway bridge that crosses a diversion channel of the Ushishubetsu River, and serves as a landmark of the region. The features of this bridge are:
- Adoption of PC diagonal members: The diagonal members are PC structures with increased PC steel stress intensity. Additionally, the cables, which pass through the structure via a saddle on the main column, are fixed on both sides of the cross beam. This method is useful when considering the severe flexural limit of a railway bridge.
- The precasting for PC diagonal members: For the first time in Japan, this bridge utilized precast in the PC diagonal members.
- Measurement management: Construction of the cable stayed bridge was carried out using in-place concrete construction (total scaffolding method), resulting in complex changes to the structural system once pre-stressing was introduced to the main girder and diagonal members. For this reason, the stress intensity and member displacements were monitored and used as feedback for future construction.
This bridge was awarded the 1998 Japan Society of Civil Engineers Hokkaido Branch Technology Prize.
